Polar bear attacked reindeer herder family in Yamal

A polar bear attacked a family of reindeer herders in the remote inland tradin post of Ust-Juribey, Yamal-Nenets autonomous region, Yamal Media reported.

A polar bear invaded a tent and attacked a five-year-old child who was being protected by her grandmother. The head of the family rushed to the scene and managed to save the family, but was seriously injured.

The head of the family, Oleg Laptander, is currently undergoing resuscitation at Salekhard Hospital. His condition is stable, while the district wildlife officers were dispatched to the scene of the attack. As it is not allowed to hunt polar bears, the plan is to capture it and transport it to its natural habitat.
