International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples

On 9 August, the Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples is celebrated internationally, because on this day in 1992 was the first meeting of the UN Working Group on Indigenous Populations.

On 23 December 1994, the UN decided to start celebrating the day annually and internationally as the Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples. This was confirmed by resolution 49/214 of the UN General Assembly.

Among the Finno-Ugric and Samoyedic peoples, the following nations are indigenous: Izhorians, Seto, Votes, Veps, Khanty, Mansi, Enets, Nenets, Nganasans, and Selkups.
