Finno-Ugric activists made proposals at the UN for the protection of languages

Center Young Karelia participated in the 12th session of UN Expert Mechanism on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (EMRIP), here is a report highlighting what they did.

12th session of the UN Expert Mechanism on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples started with the celebration of the 2019 International Year of Indigenous Languages. International Year’s Steering Committee held its 10th session and worked on the draft outcome document. There was also a well-attended side event devoted to the normative framework on indigenous languages, hosted by UNESCO.

Center for Support of Indigenous Peoples and Civic Diplomacy “Young Karelia” was represented at the side event by its Chair Alexey Tsykarev and Director of Centre for Innovative Language Technologies of the Republic of Komi Marina Fedina. Ms. Fedina was one of the main speakers at the side event. Her presentation and recommendations got a lot of attention and inspired discussions and partnership proposals. Other presentations at the side event were devoted to the newly adopted Indigenous Languages Act in Canada and indigenous languages in Australia.
