Literary Award 📚

Since 2007, the Kindred Peoples’ Programme confers a Kindred Peoples’ Literary Award in cooperation with the Finno-Ugric Literary Association. The aim of the award is to recognise the work of authors or translators of the literature of kindred peoples without their own statehood.

The Literary Award may be issued to:

1. a writer or a translator for a work of fiction of noteworthy literary and linguistic value published in a kindred people’s language in the past four years (2020—2024);
2. a writer or a translator whose activities have notably helped introduce the literature of kindred peoples without their own statehood in Estonia and at the European level. 

Prize fund is 2,500 euros.

Laureates of the Literary Award will be announced on 1^st November, which is the memorial day of the Udmurt writer and public figure Kuzebai Gerd (1898–1937).

By 8^rd October 2024:

This year, the competition welcomes the works of writers who are based outside of the Russian Federation. Anyone may make nominations. The same nominator may nominate several candidates.

1. fill out and submit an electronic application form along with required additional documents;
2. send two copies of the published work (based on the date of the postal stamp; books posted after 8^rd October 2024 do not qualify for the competition) on the following address:

The following information must be provided in the electronic nomination form:

• Award –> Literary Award
• Award category (choose one) –>
  1. work published in the years 2020—2024;
  2. promoting the literature of kindred peoples without their own statehood;
• Data of the nominee(s)
• Nominator’s contact details
• Description of the application:
  1. title and year of publication of the work submitted for the award
  2. description of the candidate’s activities
• Required additional documents, that must be uploaded with the nomination:
  • 1-2 references or recommendation letters (in Estonian, Russian, or English);
  • list of previously published original and/or translated works.
• A .pdf file of the published work and links to internet-based materials such as media coverage, etc. may be added to the application.
• NB! All uploaded file names must include reference to the content of the document and the nominee’s name! E.g.: Reference_JohnSmith; ListOfPublications_JohnSmith.

NB! Since the electronic form cannot be saved before submission, please fill it out only once you have all the required documents at hand to be uploaded with the nomination. 

We kindly ask you to familiarise yourself with the statute of the award and the guidelines for nominating candidates. The coordinator of the Kindred Peoples’ Programme will send you a confirmation email when your nomination has been received.
