The VIII World Congress of Finno-Ugric Peoples to take place next year

NGO Fenno-Ugria announces that new dates have been set for the VIII World Congress of Finno-Ugric Peoples, which was postponed due to the global crisis caused by the COVID-19 virus. According to the decision of the Consultative Committee of Finno-Ugric Peoples, the World Congress will take place a year from now – from the 16th to the 18th of June 2021.

The location of the congress, which was initially planned for summer 2020 in Tartu, will remain the same – the Estonian National Museum. Additionally, the main theme of the congress “Cultural landscapes – language and mind” will remain the same.

According to World Congress Project Manager Helle Helena Puusepp the organising team of the congress will continue with preparation works. “Among other things we will proceed with the registration process for congress observers and journalists. All of the registrations already made, and participation fees paid will remain valid,” Puusepp specified.

In connection with the postponement of the VIII World Congress of Finno-Ugric Peoples, the logotype and the visuals of the congress have gone through the biggest change. The central patterns of the new visual theme – chosen by the author of the logotype, Estonian artist Peeter Laurits – are bark beetle galleries and petroglyphs from a cliff near the White Sea area.

“For me these are like a metaphor of the handwriting of nature. I believe these details speak a familiar story to all of us and they are also connected by the maroon, red colour,” Laurits explained.

Estonia expects representatives of 23 different Finno-Ugric nations to the VIII World Congress of Finno-Ugric Peoples. Altogether, about 500 people will participate in the congress, including 215 delegates, as well as observers, guests and journalists. The presidents of Finland, Hungary, Russia and Estonia have been invited to the opening ceremony of the congress.
