Main event of Finno-Ugric Capital of Culture held in Kuhmo

The Finno-Ugric Capital of Culture 2023 is in Kuhmo, Finland. The title is awarded to a Finnish municipality for the first time in the contest that has been held since 2014.

Throughout the year, the Finno-Ugric Capital of Culture organises events with Finno-Ugric themes. The main cultural event of Kuhmo has traditionally been the Sommelo Ethno Music Festical. This year, the festival took place between 26 June and 2 July. The festival drew over 7,000 visitors to musical events and 6,000 to cultural events of Kuhmo.

The programme of Finno-Ugric Capitals of Culture aims to raise awareness of Finno-Ugric and Samoyedic peoples as well as Uralic languages, to strengthen collective Finno-Ugric identity and to stimulate sustainable local development in different corners of the Finno-Ugric world.
