Kindred Peoples’ Programme call for nominations

The aim of these awards is to recognise academic works by representatives of kindred
Uralic peoples without their own state. The awards are given for a monograph, collection
of articles or full volume published in the past four years (2022–2026):

1. URALIC ETHNIC STUDIES AWARD 2026 is given for academic work about Uralic
ethnic studies (literature, linguistics, history, archaeology, ethnology, and
folkloristics) in any language;

2. SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH PUBLISHED IN A URALIC LANGUAGE AWARD 2026 is
given for academic work in any field written in a Uralic language.

The deadline for submitting nominations is 15 September, 2026.
• anyone can make a nomination, and self-nominations are also permitted;
• this year, the call is open to researchers based outside the Russian Federation;
• applications should be submitted electronically by 15 September 2026.

Laureates of the awards will be announced on the Kindred Peoples’ Day, which this year falls on
17 October.

The Kindred People’s Programme is an Estonian state programme aimed at supporting the
languages and cultures of Finno-Ugric and Samoyedic indigenous peoples. The
programme applies to the Finno-Ugric – Livonians, Votes, Ludians, Izhorians, Ingrian
Finns, Karelians, Veps, Sámi, Erzya, Moksha, Mari, Udmurts, Komi, Khanty, Mansi – and
Samoyedic – Nenets, Enets, Nganasans and Selkups – kindred peoples who have their
own languages and cultures but no independent state of their own.
