At the request of Fenno-Ugria, artist Piret Räni has collected legends and folktales for the calendar that tell of the meaning and importance of birds and animals in the Finno-Ugric world, starting with creation stories and adding other traditions from the times of shamanistic worldview.
‘I tried to find the oldest links connecting the Finno-Ugric cultures. There are actually a lot of them, if you don’t get bogged down in names and obviously newer layers. Birds and animals are a very good subject for this kind of excavation to find common ground, as they have been our companions in this climatic zone for millennia,’ the artist expresses happiness with the theme.
‘The breathtaking worldview of the ancient Ugric hunters is very well conveyed by the birds flying between worlds and the animals ensuring their survival. Try to imagine what it’s like to believe that the world was brought up from the bottom of the primordial sea at the dawn of time by a duck, and that the souls of the dead fly with swans on a bird’s flight.’
The pictures of the calendar can be hung on the wall throughout the year, and the calendar can also be used as a colouring book, where you can tear out the pages one by one and colour them yourself.
The calendar is supported by the Cultural Endowment and the Ministry of Culture of Estonia.
