In Mari El, raions will be replaced by municipalities

The Head of the Republic of Mari El, Yuri Zaitsev, told the news agency TASS that the republic is planning a reform of its administration: instead of raions, there will be municipalities. This would make it easier for citizens to communicate with the state authorities, and much more operationally. The reform, however, raises concerns.

The position of the authorities is clear: a simpler and more efficient system of governance, a unified administrative system that reduces bureaucracy. Territorial administrative units, in the form of village councils, will remain, with their names, status and budget.

According to the information currently available, the Kilemar raion has been replaced by the Kilemar municipality. The remaining boundaries are being prepared for the transition.
