Republic of Karelia declared a terrorist organisation in Russia

On 28 December, the decision of the Supreme Court of the Russian Federation № АКПИ24-898с of 22 November 2024 entered into force. It supplements the list of ‘terrorist’ organisations, which now includes the international organisation in the form of a social movement ‘Forum of Post-Russian Free States and its structural units’. A total of 172 entities have been added to the list. For example, the name of the Republic of Karelia in Karelian has been added to the list, as well as ‘the United States of Siberia’. Svetlana Kaverzina, a former deputy of the Novosibirsk City Duma, has written that the latter was the name of a flag with snowballs on a blue background. In 2013, Siberian artists travelled under this flag to their exhibitions in Moscow, St Petersburg and Tomsk.

Already by now it is clear that the list has caused a great deal of confusion and misunderstanding. The list includes press publications, real organisations, organisations that never existed and – it turns out – the official names of republics. The list also includes a very large number of organisations of Finno-Ugric peoples, the list of which we reproduce here without translation, as published on the FSB website:

Purpose of the list

One of the main aims of publishing the list is to intimidate, because people linked to a terrorist organisation are either terrorists or collaborators of terrorists and are subject to extermination, elimination, and so on.

Secondly, it can also be said that there is an active search for internal enemies, as was done in Russia in the 1930s. Then, for example, the Finno-Ugric conspiracy (SOFIN) was invented, which also used fictitious organisations, but at the same time accused real people whose guilt was primarily that they thought that life was better in Finland and Estonia than in the Soviet Union.
