Competition for Finno-Ugric Capital of Culture 2025 begins
URALIC Centre together with Sukukansojen Ystävät ry and the Finnish-Hungarian Society announced the beginning of the competition on 4 March 2024.
The competition for the title of the Finno-Ugric Capital of Culture 2025 has begun. The thematic focus of the year will be the renewal of Finno-Ugric cooperation and civic movement. The winner of the competition will be announced in 29 June in Kuhmo, Finland.
Finno-Ugric Capitals of Culture is a flagship initiative of the Youth Association of Finno-Ugric Peoples (MAFUN) And URALIC Centre for Indigenous Peoples NGO which was established in 2013. Fenno-Ugria has been a cooperation partner of the Finno-Ugric Capitals of Culture programme since its inception.
To date, the title of Finno-Ugric Capital of Culture has been awarded to ten villages or cities: Udmurt village Bygy (2014), Seto village Obinitsa (2015), Hungarian village Iszkaszentgyörgy and City of Veszprém (2016), Karelian village Vuokkiniemi (2017), Mari village Shorunzha (2019), Mari village Mishkan in Bashkortostan (2020), Mulgi village Abja-Paluoja in Estonia (2021), Baiterek in Bashkortostan (2022) and Kuhmo in North Finland (2023).
For the competition of Finno-Ugric Capital of Culture 2025, villages, towns and cities from and Finno-Ugric country or region are welcome to apply, except national capitals (in the case of Estonia, Finland and Hungary) or regional capitals in the Russian Federation.
Application materials of the Finno-Ugric Capital of Culture 2025 competition are available on the programme’s website. The deadline for written applications is 30 April 2024.
