The only indigenous people of the European Union are mostly unknown throughout the world. Read in this article about their origin, customs, and the discrimination exerted on them throughout history.<\/strong><\/p>\n

February 6 is the S\u00e1mi National Day. The date was chosen to commemorate the first S\u00e1mi congress, which was held in Trondheim (Norway) in 1917.<\/p>\n

The S\u00e1mi people (sometimes spelled Sami or Saami) are a Finno-Ugrian group originally from\u00a0the northern\u00a0parts of\u00a0Finland, Norway, Sweden<\/strong>\u00a0and parts of North-Eastern\u00a0Russia.\u00a0<\/strong>Nowadays, the biggest group of S\u00e1mi people (about half of them) are living in Norway.<\/p>\n

The total S\u00e1mi population is estimated to be over 75,000, and there are\u00a0about 10,000 S\u00e1mi in Finland<\/strong>, more than 60 per cent of them living outside the S\u00e1mi Homeland.<\/p>\n

According to the book\u00a0‘Finland, a cultural encyclopedia’<\/em>, published by the Finnish Literature Society, the S\u00e1mi have lived in their current location for at least\u00a02,000 years<\/strong>, since the beginning of what is known as the\u00a0S\u00e1mi Iron Age<\/strong>, probably longer.<\/p>\n
