The United Nations have declared 2019 to be the International Year of Indigenous Languages. To mark this occasion, the Department of Finno-Ugric Studies at the Faculty of Humanities, E\u00f6tv\u00f6s Lor\u00e1nd University is organising an international conference entitled Indigenous Languages, Endangered Cultures, lasting from November 28 to November 29, 2019.<\/div>\n

<\/div>\n
The event is simultaneously part of a programme series called the Estonian Language Year. On the first afternoon of the conference a thematic symposium entitled A hundred years of Estonian language will also be conducted. In addition, the programme features thematic Estonian and Livonian book launches.
\nLanguages play a crucial role not only in everyday communication but also in the maintenance of cultural inheritance together with the unique social identity of their speakers. However, a significant part of the world\u2019s languages are endangered indigenous tongues. The conference focuses on the recent situation and the alarming future questions of indigenous languages. Our aim is to consider the possible linguistic and cultural strategies which could contribute to maintaining the present level of global cultural diversity.<\/div>\n

Topics relevant to conference papers or posters should include (but are not restricted to) the following issues:<\/strong>
\n\u2022 Indigenous languages as the guardians of endangered cultures
\n\u2022 Standardisation problems of indigenous languages
\n\u2022 Linguistic and cultural diversity as a global richness of humanity
\n\u2022 Roles of the linguistic and cultural traditions in preserving communities
\n\u2022 The impact of contact-induced language changes on some grammatical categories in indigenous languages (e.g. through the symplifying singular-dual-(trial), and grammatical evidentiality-systems)The conference\u2019s patron is Her Excellency Kristi Karelsohn, the Estonian Ambassador to Hungary in Budapest.<\/div>\n

\nOfficial languages:<\/strong> Hungarian and English, as well as Estonian during the Estonian symposium
\nParticipation fee:<\/strong> 50 EUR; doctoral students: 25 EUR.
\nThe fee includes participation in the conference, a copy of the abstract booklet, coffee breaks between sections as well as lunch and dinner on November 28.Abstracts<\/strong> should be a maximum of 4000 characters in length, including the main references. Abstracts will be reviewed anonymously by two experts.<\/p>\n
