Its status as an independent language is disputed, but in Sweden it is recognized as one of the&nbsp;country&#8217;s five&nbsp;minority languages[needs clarification].<\/p><p>On April 1, 2000, <em>Me\u00e4nkieli<\/em> became one of the now five nationally recognized&nbsp;minority languages&nbsp;of Sweden, which means it can be used for&nbsp;some communication with local and regional authorities in the communities along the Finnish border. It is named after the&nbsp;Torne River&nbsp;flowing through the valley and into the&nbsp;Gulf of Bothnia. <\/p><p>Geographically the townships and municipalities that make up the area are&nbsp;Haparanda,&nbsp;\u00d6vertorne\u00e5,&nbsp;Pajala&nbsp;and&nbsp;Kiruna&nbsp;in Sweden, and&nbsp;Tornio,&nbsp;Ylitornio,&nbsp;Pello,&nbsp;Kolari,&nbsp;Muonio&nbsp;and&nbsp;Enonteki\u00f6&nbsp;in Finland. Culturally the Swedish municipality&nbsp;G\u00e4llivare&nbsp;is also considered part of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.meanmaa.net\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Me\u00e4nmaa<\/a> due to the large share of&nbsp;Me\u00e4nkieli-speaking population in it.
